QUANT STRATEGY LAB & SIMULATION ARCHITECTURE

Quant Strategy Backtesting & Algorithmic Simulation

A trading model is only as credible as the rigor of its historical validation. Gautam Quant Terminal Strategy Lab provides an institutional backtesting environment that accounts for order book liquidity, spread friction, taker fees, and market impact to prevent the dangerous pitfalls of curve-fitting.

The Reality of Institutional Backtesting

Most naive retail backtesters yield inflated, unrealistic performance figures because they assume instant fills at bar closing prices with zero slippage. In production markets, large limit orders experience queue latency, and aggressive market orders chew through the order book. Gautam Quant Terminal simulates:

  • Dynamic Slippage Modeling: Fills are penalized proportionally to market volatility and local book depth.
  • Tiered Fee Structure: Complete accounting for exchange taker/maker fee schedules and funding rates.
  • Intra-Bar High/Low Sequence: Rigorous evaluation to ensure stop-losses and take-profits are resolved without lookahead bias.

Core Statistical & Risk Metrics

Profitability alone is an incomplete metric. Strategy Lab measures the mathematical quality of a return distribution through four fundamental risk ratios:

Sharpe Ratio

Quantifies excess return per unit of total annualized standard deviation. Gauges baseline efficiency over multiple market regimes.

Sortino Ratio

Isolates downside deviation, rewarding upside volatility while penalizing adverse drawdowns and equity volatility.

Maximum Drawdown (MDD)

Measures peak-to-trough capital decline. Essential for calculating ruin probability and position-sizing constraints.

Profit Factor & Expectancy

The ratio of gross profits to gross losses alongside average mathematical payoff per trade over the test corpus.

Walk-Forward Optimization & Overfitting Protection

Overfitting occurs when algorithmic parameters are excessively tuned to historical noise, resulting in catastrophic failure in live forward testing. Strategy Lab enforces walk-forward analysis:

In-Sample Calibration Window → Out-of-Sample Rolling Verification → Monte Carlo Stress Testing

By continuously rotating the evaluation window across varying volatility environments (trending, consolidating, cascading), our models verify robust parameter stability before any live deployment.
