Engulfing versus a previous-low close
What is this concept?
Body engulfing compares body endpoints. A close below the previous low compares a close with the full candle's low. These are distinct conditions.
Step by step
Write exact inequalities before scanning. Separate wick breaks, equality, body engulfing and completed close breaks. Define entry and invalidation independently.
From observation to decision
Record the instrument, venue, session and timeframe. Classify the observation using the definition, then write at least one alternative interpretation. Decide what evidence would invalidate your idea before entry. Mark missing information explicitly. Examples are hypothetical. Collect paper observations, including failures. Include fees, spread, slippage and timestamp alignment when measuring outcomes. Recognizing a chart shape and establishing a profitable trading rule are separate tasks.
Worked example
First O100 C105 L98 H106; second O104 C97 H105 L96 closes below the previous low. Its open does not reach the previous close, so it is not strict full-body engulfing.
Common mistakes and limits
Avoid calling every low break engulfing, treating a wick as a close or accepting equality as strictly below.
Practice
Build one example for each condition and check each inequality independently.
