Market structure: rhythm and direction

What is this concept?

Market structure describes successive swings. Higher highs and higher lows describe an uptrend; lower highs and lows describe a downtrend. Overlapping swings may describe a range.

Step by step

Define a pivot rule, such as two completed bars on each side. Connect confirmed pivots and distinguish noise from larger swings. Confirmation bars were not available at the pivot's timestamp.

From observation to decision

Record the instrument, venue, session and timeframe. Classify the observation using the definition, then write at least one alternative interpretation. Decide what evidence would invalidate your idea before entry. Mark missing information explicitly. Examples are hypothetical. Collect paper observations, including failures. Include fees, spread, slippage and timestamp alignment when measuring outcomes. Recognizing a chart shape and establishing a profitable trading rule are separate tasks.

Worked example

Highs 105, 110, 114 and lows 100, 103, 107 rise together. A close at 106 breaks the last confirmed low at 107, suggesting a possible change; further swings are needed to describe a downtrend.

Common mistakes and limits

Avoid calling every dip a reversal, changing pivot rules after seeing outcomes or using unconfirmed pivots as known information.

Practice

Mark swings with a fixed rule. Record the trend before viewing ten more bars, then compare labels under a different pivot rule.
